Brattleboro
Nestled between the West and Connecticut Rivers, Brattleboro was chartered December 26, 1753, covers approximately 32 square miles, and is 310 feet above sea level. The resident population is12,005 (2000 Census), however this grows to over 35,000 during the daytime, as people from the outling areas travel here to work and shop. While there is a heavily populated downtown urban area, a large part of town is very rural in nature. Brattleboro was recently named the nation's fifth best small town by Norman Crampton in his book, "The 100 Best Small Towns in America".

Exits 1,2, and 3 off of Interstate 91are all within town, and US Routes 5 and 9 run through its heart, making up the major arteries for traffic.

Brattleboro Area
Brattleboro is bordered by Newfane and Dummerston to the north; Marlboro to the west; Vernon and Guilford to the south; and the New Hampshire towns of Chesterfield and Hinsdale to the east. Hinsdale, Chesterfield and Vernon have their own police departments, while Newfane, Dummerston, Marlboro and Guilford are all patrolled by the Vermont State Police and/or the Windham County Sheriff's Department.

Transportation
Automobile:
There are various cab companies in Brattleboro, and a town operated bus service called the Bee Line. Vermont Transit also has a bus terminal on Putney Road near exit 3 off I91.

There is one rail station, located at the intersection of Bridge and Depot streets. There are 2 Amtrak passenger trains that stop here daily.

Department
The Brattleboro Police Department has a history dating back to the early 1800's. Currently, staffing levels are as follows: 17 Patrolman, 4 Patrol Supervisors, along with 4 Detectives. The Chief of Police is assisted by 2 Captains with the day to day operations of the department.
